Detroit's Winter Classic, Detroit Red Wings Vs

Detroit's Skyline as seen from a snowy Comerica ParkAlthough the Winter Classic was the main event, holiday weekend was full of games and festivities in Downtown Detroit. Fans flocked in from all over the country and well into Canada in order to participate. The Westin Book Cadillac was the home base for Toronto fans who wanted to create a Sea of Blue in the Big House. In Detroit, at the Hockey Town Winterfest, fans enjoyed games of pickup hockey, replica locker rooms, and some lucky ones managed to catch a glimpse of the Stanley Cup.

In a normally slow, pre-auto show season for Detroit, the Winter Classic stirred up business for many businesses from restaurants to hotels alike. The Winter Classic happens every year (next year the Washington Capitals host) but nothing quite compares to the crowd that the Big House holds.

Our drivers were busy taking people to and from The Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, so we got to experience, first-hand, how many people were enjoying the game with one another despite the 13 degree game time temperature. Interestingly enough, in spite of the rivalry of two Original Six teams, the fans seemed to form a bond over the cold. It’s probably hard not to form a bond when you’re in a stadium with over 105 thousand people.

We hope that the city can have more great events like this in the future. Events like The Winter Classic generate tourism and tourism makes our city even greater. With the Detroit Auto Show just around the bend, we look forward to another busy month in Detroit. We at Athens Transportation hope to be your car service in Detroit for another event just like the Winter Classic. Here’s to a great 2014. Happy new year!
