Travel Guide to the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort in Michigan

Photo via their official site.Crystal Mountain maximizes the potential of its small surface area (88 acres of skiable terrain, to be precise) with 48 downhill slopes (including 28 illuminated for night skiing), four terrain areas, three glades, one designated learning area, eight lifts and more than 40 km of cross-country skiing. And that’s not even touching on all of the other winter activities on the premises.

See what these visitors had to say about Crystal Mountain:

Named by Michigan Living Magazine as the #1 cross-country skiing trail network in Michigan, Crystal Mountain’s over 40 km of groomed trails offer all kinds of X-C terrain, from rolling hills, aspen and oak spans, black diamond trails across valleys and open meadows. They keep four kilometres of their trails lit for serene night skiing. The mini-trail system in the XC Training Center features flat and rolling sections specially designed for picking up new skate and ski techniques.

The three best ways to familiarize oneself with Crystal Mountain:

Crystal Mountain takes much of the hassle out of kids lessons: for a price less than most big ski resorts, their instructors offer a “Melt-down Free Private Lesson” for kids aged 2-4 with optional child-care for the rest of the day, full-day Adventure Cubs programs, ski-and-care group classes that include lunch and snacks; even a Nanny McSki Doorstep Program, which sends an instructor who is also trained in childcare to meet the kids at their doorstep, feed them breakfast and lunch, supervise equipment rentals and fittings, and take them skiing. Now that’s a vacation!

Thistle Pub and Grille could easily be passed out as your typical comfortable ski lodge pub. It’s certainly got the brews handy, and regular pub go-tos (burgers, chili and more). However, this is a pub that will surprise. For example, their burger isn’t just a slab of regular beef on a patty – it’s kobe, from Snake River Farms topped with a house-made pickle and chips. Their appetizers include Pig & Truffle Frites, ahi wontons, Naan covered in chèvre, pesto, roasted garlic and tomatoes, and their famous and explosive Betsie Rock Steak – thin slices of raw beef or tuna with a miso-mirin chili glaze cooked by the diner on preheated Betsie River rocks. Ingredients harvested and bred by local farms. A wine list longer than both their lunch and dinner menus combined, boasting names of countries all over Europe with a central focus on homegrown soil. You know what? On second thought, don’t ever call Thistle Pub & Grille a typical comfortable ski lodge pub. It’s an institution in its own right.
